Hailing from Inishowen in North Donegal, Luke McGuinness comes from a fishing and seafaring background. Much of his life was spent working with his hands — from long stints at sea to helping out on the family oyster farm. That grounding in physical work and reflection runs through his music: tactile, thoughtful, and rooted in real experience.
His love of music began early and evolved as he travelled, worked, and lived across different places. Drawing from funk, soul, electronic, and rock’n’roll, Luke blends genre with feeling, often returning to Fleet Foxes as a touchstone: “like listening to nature.”
A turning point came after reading The Artist’s Way and (in classic artist fashion) getting his phone stolen on a wild night in Madrid. He took it as a sign to stop holding back — and finally start recording the songs he’d been writing in private for years.
Previously part of Spring Tides, a raucous six-piece folk outfit, Luke spent his early twenties gigging, singing harmonies, and swapping songs (and pints) with friends. That time laid the foundation for the music he makes today — soulful, story-driven, and alive with emotional depth.
Luke’s debut solo album, Far Out Woo-woo, is a surreal, soulful journey recorded over two years at Blast Furnace Studios in Derry with producer Rory Donaghy. The 12-track record draws on more than a decade of songwriting — a mix of old and new that’s emotionally rich and sonically playful.
Initially nervous about stepping into the studio, Luke quickly found his stride. The process became not just a technical challenge but a personal and creative transformation.
“I didn’t want twelve versions of the same song. Albums should be like road trips — a few detours, a couple of bumpy bits, and at least one track that makes you weirdly emotional.”
The album explores themes of intimacy, avoidance, healing, and the tension between escapism and self-discovery. From relationships to quiet reckonings, there’s a thread of optimism that runs through the record — a belief in creativity as a tool for connection and change.
